Bracelet Size Guide

Bracelet Size guide

Lorna Middleton –

Ever struggled to put on a bracelet? It may be the size of the bracelet that's the problem. Most bracelets come in a specific size range but there is a variety, so it could be this that is making wearing your jewellery difficult. In this guide, we'll show how different bracelet types can increase or decrease a bracelet size. Plus, how to measure your wrist to get the best fit.

Bracelet Sizes

A bracelet size can be determined by several things. Bracelets can be different because of their particular structure such as a bangle or cuff design. They can also be of different sizes depending on the type of fastening. Some bracelets have extenders to allow for multiple size options, whilst others are fixed in length. Here's what to consider in each of these areas.

Bracelet Style

There are many different types of bracelets but for simplicity sake, we'll be focusing on traditional link bracelets, bangles and cuff bracelets. These three bracelet styles represent the three main structures.

Link or chain, bracelets are made of a length of flexible material usually with a simple fastening to join the two ends together. These types of bracelets are usually between 15cm and 20cm in full length. Bangle bracelets are usually measured based on the circumference or width of the bangle. They range in sizes from 6cm to 7cm.

Cuff bracelets are adjustable, featuring an opening on one edge of the bangle surround. They are normally the same size as bangles but as they are movable they can be adjusted for putting on and securing in place.

Consider which bracelet style you want to get and the impact that may have when wearing the piece.

Bracelet Fastenings

The fastening style of a bracelet can reduce the overall length. Just one more thing to consider when buying bracelets. A trigger clasp or lobster clasp will keep the length of a chain bracelet the same. A T-bar fastening may reduce the overall length marginally. Hook and eye, or locking clasps will reduce the length further because more material is encased to secure the bracelet.

These types of fastenings are all features of chain bracelets. Bangles, on the other hand, are slipped over the hand, allowing them to stay on the wrist without a fastening. Cuff bracelets also don't feature a fastening. Instead, their adjustability means they can be worn for many different sized wrists. Plus, if your wrist size fluctuates, it can easily be adjusted to your new size.

Bracelet Extenders

If you are finding that many bracelets don't fit or you find it difficult to fasten them, an extender may help. An extender chain is a small additional length of links that can be attached to a fastening to extend the bracelet length. They are also used for necklaces as well. You can purchase these extenders separately if you want to lengthen a bracelet you already own. But, you'll find that most bracelet sellers provide extenders as standard. At PRYA, the vast majority of our chain bracelets come with an extender. These range from 4cm to 6cm.

How to Measure Your Wrist for Bracelets

Finding the measurements of your wrist can help you choose a bracelet that is the perfect fit. Depending on the bracelet type, you may want to know what different measurements to take. It could be wrist circumference, wrist width, or hand circumference.

The easiest way to measure this part of your body is with a piece of string. Wrap the string around the chosen area so you can find the length. You can then measure the piece of string against a tape measure or ruler to find out the size you need. Here are a few tips for measuring different bracelet types.

  • For chain bracelets that sit on your wrist, you'll want to measure the circumference of your wrist. Once you have your measurement, add at least 1cm so the bracelet you order is not too tight.
  • For bangle bracelets, you'll want to measure the wrist but also the knuckles of your hand. By measuring the hand around the thumb and knuckle area, you'll ensure the bangle fits when you receive it.
  • Cuff Bracelets are flexible but you should still ensure you can get them on without bending them too far out of shape. Measure the wrist in the same way as for a bangle but ensure there is at least 1cm in give for adjustments.

Compare your wrist measurement to the sizing charts provided by retailers for their bracelets. You want to buy one that fits and they may not always be an exact match. Always go for a size that’s slightly bigger to ensure that it fits well if you are unsure.
